CRC Solvency Solutions

In July 2008, Associate Beata Leszczuk presented a seminar on “The Essential Facts of Family Law – Entitlements at Property Settlement” at the CRC Solvency Solutions Seminar on the Gold Coast. This seminar was a culmination of cross-industry professionals educating those in the accounting industry about the impacts that their given fields can have on the clients of this profession. As an Accredited Family Law Specialist, Beata was asked to present some of her extensive knowledge in family law.

Television Education Network

In March 2007, Associate Beata Leszczuk presented the paper ‘Assessing Contributions: Impact of Inheritances, Gifts and Windfalls'. This paper was part of the Cutting Edge Law Series seminar, Family Law Property Orders: Something Old and Something New held by the Television Education Network. This seminar was aimed at providing information to industry practitioners and representatives on the issues associated with property settlements and complex property matters. Hartley Healy was asked to be involved due to our experience and expertise in this area.

Family Law Practitioners' Association

In April 2008 Richard Mahler delivered a paper and ran a workshop on ‘drafting persuasive Affidavits' at the Inaugural Darling Downs Family Law Intensive held in Toowoomba. The Conference was run by the Family Law Practitioners' Association of Queensland Limited and Downs and South Western Queensland Law Association Incorporated in conjunction with the Federal Magistrates Court of Australia and USQ School of Law. In September 2007, the Family Law Practitioners Association residential was held to address the latest changes to the Family Law regime in Queensland . The event attracted legal practitioners, judiciary members as well as industry experts from around the world. As part of this two day event, Sarah Minnery was chosen to participate as a panel member at one of the Residential sessions being convened by Barrister-at-Law Jacoba Brasch. Jacoba chaired a session that presented a series of hypothetical questions regarding complex case management to the panel. Sarah was chosen to participate in this due to her experience and reputation in complex case management.



Queensland's annual Family Law Masterclass is an opportunity for industry practitioners to come together and discuss the key issues affecting the area of Family Law. The two-day event sees presentations and discussions from some of the most reputable and experienced Family Law representatives not only in the State, but also nationwide. For many years, Hartley Healy has been involved in this event. At the 4th Annual Family Law Masterclass held in May 2007, Sarah Minnery was asked to address conference delegates on complex property settlements. Sarah in association with Mr Joe Box presented the paper “Information is Power: What to look for and where to look in complex property matters”. At the 2005 Family Law Masterclass, Sarah was invited to chair the Young Lawyers Day.

As a well known leading Australian Family Lawyer, Brett has also been invited to speak at this event. At the 2nd Annual Family Law Masterclass in Queensland in May 2005, Brett addressed conference delegates on the subject “ Effectively Dealing with Discretionary Trusts and Hidden Assets ”. He was also a guest speaker at the first Family Law Masterclass which was held in Brisbane in July 2004. Brett addressed this conference on " The Family Court's treatment of third party interests in property settlements ”.

Family Law Masterclass was organised by Key Media Pty Ltd . Key Media is a leading organiser of quality cutting-edge conferences and seminars that focus on professional education and training for professionals from numerous fields. Key Media events are designed to cater to the needs of professionals, senior executives and business leaders. Speakers are drawn from leading legal, accounting and finance firms as well as large corporates.



As part of the Professional Development services offered by LexisNexis, the organisation often holds seminars and presentations aimed at keeping the legal community up to date and informed of the latest news and practice in the industry. Many leading practitioners are involved in these activities within their areas of expertise, including the solicitors here at Hartley Healy. Most recently, Associate Tuskeen Jacobs chaired the seminar ‘Select perspectives on practice and procedure in the Family Court'. This seminar was one in the LexisNexis seminar series ‘ Queensland courts and tribunal practice and procedure' which ran from February to July 2007.

Associate Sarah Minnery has also been involved in the LexisNexis Professional Development program through her invited participation in the Family Law Essentials seminars. In 2004, Sarah was asked to chair this event and in 2006, was invited to conduct a post seminar workshop on the subject of valuing with the paper ‘Property of the Parties to a Marriage – Tacking Step 1'.

Both Brett and Sarah are also regularly asked to be involved in the LexisNexis Family Law Masterclass Queensland . Brett presented at this event in both 2004 and 2005 while Sarah has been involved with this event in 2005 and 2007.



Brett Hartley was interviewed by Justine Harris for Tribeca's Professional Development Video Session on "Financial Planning for Divorce" in March 2005. This interview was subsequently distributed to 20,000 Financial Advisers across Australia . From 2000 to 2002, Brett Hartley lectured regularly in Family Law for Tribeca's Diploma of Financial Planning, provided to the financial planning industry. This Family Law module was designed to provide Financial Planners with an understanding and knowledge of areas of Family Law that may impact upon their client's financial situation and the possible consequences that may result upon the breakdown of their client's relationship.

Tribeca is the industry leader in accredited financial services education, professional development and compliance solutions. Tribeca's clients include Australia 's largest banks, insurance companies and financial planning companies.



Brett Hartley's Family Law expertise is recognized by firms specializing in providing ongoing training for Australian Lawyers. Brett has presented for many Legalwise Seminars since their inception. Brett chaired the Legalwise Family Law Seminar presented in Brisbane in April 2005. In July 2004, Brett presented a seminar and paper entitled Third Party and Property Applications - The Practical Guide . This seminar was presented to other Family Lawyers and it dealt with Property Injunctions against Third Parties and the Family Court's jurisdiction to hear such claims. In May 2004 Brett presented a Legalwise Seminar to other Family Lawyers on Conflicts of Laws . In September 2003, Brett presented a Legalwise Seminar to Junior Family Law Solicitors on the Basics of Family Law (see also Annexure C , Annexure D and Annexure E ). In April 2003, Brett conducted another presentation for Legalwise Seminars on Collating and Presenting expert evidence in Children's matters before the Family Court . Legalwise Seminars is a specialist firm providing continuing legal education and professional development to lawyers and other professionals.



Brett Hartley is acknowledged as a leading expert Family Lawyer and as a result, is often asked to present on the latest Developments in Family Law by specialist seminar providers. Brett is regularly invited by LAMMS Seminars to present a seminar to other Family Lawyers. LAAMS is a leading nation-wide provider of continuing professional education and development, and support staff training for a diverse range of professional groups. In March 2004, Brett presented a half day Family Law Seminar on the recent changes to Family Law Court Rules and Current Issues in Family Law. Brett has been conducting presentations for LAAMS Seminars to other Family Lawyers since 2000.



Brett Hartley's enormous depth of experience earned him the honour of being invited to speak at the Financial Planning Associations of Australia 's Annual Convention and Expo held in Sydney in November 2002. This Convention was the largest financial planning event held in the Asia-Pacific region. More than 2500 Financial Planners from around Australia and the Asia-Pacific region attended. Brett addressed conference delegates on the subject "the financial consequences of separation". A key element of this address involved Brett elaborating on the new Superannuation Splitting Laws, which came into effect from late December 2002.
