COUNSELLING IN THE FAMILY COURT

Even before commencing proceedings in the Family Court, you and your partner are able to use the counselling facilities at the Brisbane Family Court. Please ask us and we will provide you with further brochures and pamphlets on the counselling services at the Family Court.

If your dispute with your partner involves children, then during the course of the Family Court proceedings, there will be a number of occasions when it will be necessary for you to attend counselling at the Family Court with your partner.

In relation to these counselling sessions, the following information is of relevance:

Solicitors are not permitted to attend these sessions;

They are held on Level 3 of the Family Court (119 North Quay, Brisbane);

If you have any concerns about violence by your partner, or if there is a Domestic Violence Order in place, you should ring and inform the counselling section of this prior to commencing counselling;

The counselling is confidential and with a few rare exceptions, nothing that is said at these counseling sessions can be repeated or relied upon in any Court hearings;

The counselling session will be conducted by an experienced Social Worker employed by the Family Court, who will attempt to resolve the dispute with yourself and your partner;

At the conclusion of the counselling session, the Counsellor will usually forward a short memo of the outcome to us.
